Chinese Tattoos
If you are considering a Chinese or oriental tattoo, be sure to check both
the content
and calligraphy with a native speaker. What looks good to you might be
very awkward to more familiar eyes. Since many English words and
especially names cannot be translated into aesthetically pleasing Chinese,
it is probably better to tattoo a Chinese character for a native Chinese
concept. Here are some common characters of interest: Tao, Zen, Buddha,
non-action (wu wei), tea, art, trust/faith, loyalty, virtue, sincere,
revere, respect, ritual, benevolence, destiny/fate, fortune, wealth,
truth, justice, wisdom, love, love, marital bliss, sex, harmony/wa,
peaceful, barbarian, martial arts, strength, power, qi, yin, yang, ghost,
spirit, chaos, heaven, I-ching (yi jing), heaven and earth (qian kun),
Confucius (Kong zi). You can find more information about each character,
including larger fonts for most characters, by clicking on the "+" sign at
the top right of the dictionary entry. Please show proper respect for
Chinese characters by choosing carefully and ensuring that the calligraphy
is done correctly and attractively.
